Trauma therapy helps those who have been exposed to difficult situations that continue to hurt them even though the trauma itself is over. Often time, survivors will find themselves experiencing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, uncontrollable obsessive fears, overwhelming anxiety and depression, irritability, and so on.
This can result in damaging relationships, careers and physical health. In therapy you will learn how to manage and eventually eliminate the residual symptoms of the trauma, increase healthy coping skills and find relief so that you can move forward in your life. Trauma therapy often includes EMDR and DBT therapies.
Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT) combines cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness practices. This helps those who struggle with mood instability learn how to be more effective in their interpersonal relationships, learn distress tolerance skills, develop emotional regulations skills and increase mindfulness.
A DBT therapist will give you immediate interventions to help decrease distressful emotions and increase effective communication. This type of therapy is about noticing and being in the present moment which will help to decrease being misunderstood, being treated unfairly and eliminate self destructive behaviors.
When we experience life changing events, the memories and emotions store in our body through our 5 senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and sound. Our brain has trouble making sense of what our experience is because of the shock response.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) uses bilateral stimulation to help the logical side of our brain speak to the emotional side of our brain allowing healing to take place. Once this happens, many of the symptoms, negative thoughts and flashbacks from the trauma are eliminated. For more information about the facets of EMDR therapy go to www.emdria.com .
